Last minute changes to our hosting plans

edit David P. Janes 2005-08-31 15:06 UTC add comment  ·  ·

We’re making two small changes to our hosting plan, further documented here.

  • we’re accepting cheques for payment
  • “archived” media files will still be available on a lower bandwidth server; i.e. your users will still be able to hear all your podcasts

More Updates

We’ve made even a few further changes to the look and feel of the site over the weekend:

  • your personal blog is now identified as such (for example, the page you’re on is ‘BlogMatrix News’)
  • entry content is now placed in a blue box to make it stand out further
  • there is now a ‘tag library’ on your posting page—just click on the links to add our suggested tags onto your pages. Furthermore, tags you have already used yourself will also be displayed here

This pretty well covers our changes for v6.

Press Release

August 24, 2005 – Toronto – BlogMatrix is pleased to announce version 6 of our blogging platform. “The new look and feel is friendlier and the functionality is richer,” states David Janes, founder of BlogMatrix. “The user experience should be second to none for podcasters, videocasters and bloggers in general.”

New features include a tagging directory for podcasts, iTunes publishing, support for many established standards including XHTML, Yahoo’s Media RSS and microformats, and “ping” support for popular podcast and blogging directories.

“For the subscriber, the new features will make it easier to organize media files and to get them out to your desired audience, whether that is a select group or the public at large,” says Janes. “The end user benefit is in the ease of subscription, download and search.”

BlogMatrix has been in an extensive free trial period to better understand our subscriber’s needs and behaviours. Based on our research, the new billing process is unique and offers one of the best values in the industry with rates from free to less than 1 dollar a day. Rates are based only on active storage used; there is no charge for bandwidth.

Our payment plans are as follows:

  • free: 15 Mb active (maximum of 4 uploads per day)
  • 15 cents/day: 100 Mb active – less than $5/month
  • 30 cents/day: 250 Mb active – about $9/month
  • 60 cents/day: 525 Mb active – about $18/month
  • 90 cents/day: 800 Mb active – less than $28/month

There is no restriction on the number or total amount of podcasts and videocasts that users may store in their account; however, only those files falling within their active quota will be served. Further details on pricing are available at www.blogmatrix.com.

Hi folks—we just updated our look. We’ve a few little kinks to straighten out, mainly with regards to the sidebars.

Hope you like it.

Whoops

The recent podcasts list may look wonky today due to some swapover issues. Sorry about that.

If everything goes well, this time tomorrow you’ll be seeing the v6 website.

Visual Changes

edit David P. Janes 2005-08-17 12:11 UTC add comment

The next version of the website will:

  • feature your podcasts and videocasts at the top of your posts, rather than at the bottom
  • a “loading” button will appear which MP3s, etc., are being download, so that you know something is happening
  • a “snail trail” will appear in the upper right hand corner of every page to make navigation easier.

MediaRSS support

The next version of the website will support Yahoo’s MediaRSS format. This includes providing alternate links for the torrent files and thumbnail support where applicable.

Directory and Tag support

edit David P. Janes 2005-08-16 10:06 UTC add comment  ·

The next version of the website will provide the user with a directory built around their tags in posting. You will also be able to look through all the tags across all users to find interesting posts, podcasts and videos.

This is the first phase of our tagging support. The second phase will allow you to tag other user’s podcasts, rate them and possibly even rate pages outside of BlogMatrix.

Customizing the sidebar

In the V6 version of the website, you will be able to add your own markup the sidebar of your weblog, just below the “About this Podcast” section.

Microformat support

As previously mentioned, the next version of the website (V6, for those counting) will support microformats. In particular:

Although this will not make an immediate difference to your life, we expect the introduction of a number of tools over the next half-year which will really start utilizing this data.

Graceful failure on oversized posts

edit David P. Janes 2005-08-03 11:51 UTC add comment

The next version of the website will not put a black line down through the middle of your blog if an entry becomes too wide to fit on the page.

Ping!

edit David P. Janes 2005-08-02 10:14 UTC add comment  ·  ·

The next version of the website software will “ping” a number a number of web directories to help get your podcasts listed. The sites we are pinging are (provisionally):

The good folks at Ping-O-Matic are actually doing the heavy lifting for us. Thanks!

XHTML 1.0

edit David P. Janes 2005-08-01 13:01 UTC add comment  ·  ·

The next version of the website will produce weblog pages that are XHTML 1.0 Transitional compliant. This is the first step in supplying better support for microformats which we will be rolling into the website over the rest of the year.
